Unleashing the magic of Science: A balloon experiment that blew my mind!

I am a student of class 5. Once at home, we were doing a boring experiment when I discovered that science could be such fun. You can create cool magic tricks using the principles of science and impress the people around you. Let me tell you how I learned this.

It was a dull summer afternoon. Having finished my homework for the day, I was just lazing around, not quite sure of what to do with myself. Suddenly, I smelled a cake being baked. It was my aunt! She often baked cakes and cookies for us.

I went to the kitchen to find out what was cooking when I saw the warm glow of the oven there. There was a rich chocolate cake inside. I was looking at the cake in wonder when my aunt caught up with me. ‘Hey, what are you staring at?’ she asked me.

Just watching the cake. It smells so good.’

She asked if I had nothing better to do than hover around the kitchen. I told her I was bored and a cake would be a good distraction. ‘Let’s teach you some science!’ she said. I had already finished my lessons for the day, and a boring science experiment was not really on my list. But some things have to be done, at least for the cake, so I agreed.

The Experiment

She asked me to gather a balloon and an empty plastic bottle. ‘Now, let me show you some magic!’ she said, rubbing her hands. But what magic could these things create, I wondered.

My aunt poured some clear liquid into the empty plastic bottle. ‘Watch,’ she said and handed me a funnel to fix at the opening of the balloon. She then asked me to pour 3 teaspoons of white powder that looked like cornflour. We affixed this balloon to the mouth of the bottle. Then, we slowly lifted the balloon up over the bottle. As we did that, the powdery substance fell through the neck into the bottle. When it reached the liquid inside it, there was a fizz. The reaction somehow caused gas bubbles to come up, and the balloon started to inflate on its own!

How Does It Work?

My aunt later explained that she had poured white vinegar into the empty plastic bottle. What I thought to be corn flour was actually baking soda. No sooner did it come into contact with the vinegar inside, than the reaction created carbon dioxide gas. The gas expanded and rose from the bottle and spread into the balloon, inflating it in the process
